Sternberg의 새로운 DVD/Film 시리즈 중 그 첫 번째 제작물은 뉴욕에서의 대화New York Conversations이다. 이 대화는 차이나타운에 있는 가게 점포 안에 임시로 개조한 부엌과 레스토랑에서 이루어진다. 음식을 먹으면서 작가, 비평가, 큐레이터들은 자유롭게 대화를 나누는 영상을 삼일동안의 다큐멘터리 형식으로 기록하였다. 벨기에 브뤼셀의 예술잡지 A Prior는Nico Dockx 와 Anton Vidokle를 초대하여 편한 대화를 유도하였으며 뛰어난 요리솜씨로 유명한 작가 Rirkrit Tiravanija는 음식을 만들면서 대화분위기를 고조시킨다. 작가들은 텍스트나 작품을 잡지에 인쇄하는 것 대신에 잡지를 만드는 새로운 방법을 만들기로 결정했다. 영상은 예술 분야에서의 노동과 관련된 질문들, 예 술적 자유의 실행가능성, 예술비평의 위엄을 되찾는 것에 대한 의미, 그리고 영상을 만드는 사실 자체가 예술인지 아닌지에 대해 나눈다. 이 작업은 한편의 독립영화 같이 제작되었다.

The first in the new Sternberg DVD/film series, New York Conversations takes place in a Chinatown storefront converted into an improvised kitchen/restaurant. It documents three days of public conversations and meals among artists, critics, curators and a free-floating public. Brussels-based art journal A Prior invited artists Nico Dockx and Anton Vidokle to facilitate the conversations, and artist Rirkrit Tiravanija – famed for his fabulous cooking – to orchestrate the meals which created the conversation-enhancing atmosphere. Instead of commissioning texts or art to be printed in the journal, the artists decided to publicly rethink the way an art journal is produced. The film explores questions concerning labor in art, the feasibility of artistic freedom, means of reclaiming dignity in art criticism, and whether the event of making the film was, in itself, an artwork. A work in the tradition of underground cinema and conceptual film.

Pages는 영어와 페르시아어로 되어 있는 매거진이다. 아티스트들과 저자들(이란을 포함,어느 곳에 있던지)간의 교류, 대화, 프로젝트를 하는 플랫폼으로서, 그리고 협업을 하는 소로서의 역할을하는 것에 그 목적이 있다. 이 매거진의 관심사는 주로 도시와 일상생활 속에서의 사회 정치적인 흐름이다.

이러한 노력들은 점점 다양해지고심지어 지리적으로 국한된 사안들과 주관적 견해들은 발전하고 되돌아가며 변화하고 또 다른 사람들과 상호 작용하면서 Pages의 다른 issue들과 함께 넘어서고 있다. 그것은 지역성을 강조한다. 그리고 지역의 현재 의미,관계들, 차이에 무너지는 복잡하고 불화와 충돌이 있다

The diversity of contributions expand and even transgress the geographicallybound subjects and subjectivities, as they often develop, return, change andinteract with one another from one issue of Pages to the other. It emphasizeson localities and it is the intricacy and dissonances within local currentsthat give way to chains of meanings, relations, differences and exchange.

아트선재센터는 2011 라운지 프로젝트의 세 번째 프로그램으로 강성은의 드로잉 전을 선보인다. 작가는 주로 자신이 사는 동네의 집이나 골목길을 먹으로 그리는 작업을 해온 바 있다. 이번 <2011 라운지 프로젝트: #3 강성은>에서는 산과 들, 도시의 밤 풍경을 담은 작가의 연필 드로잉 작업을 소개한다.

밤 풍경(nightscape)을소재로 하는 연필 드로잉(pencil drawing)

Nightscape

연필을 재료로밤이나 새벽의 모습을 그린 드로잉 작업은 작가의 여정을 담은 기록의 산물이다. 이 여정은 드로잉 작업을위해 계획된 여행인 동시에 일상의 시간을 포함한다. 작가는 강화도 마니산, 스키장, 고속도로를 달리는 중에 보이는 커다란 구조물이나 사물에관심을 두고 그 모습을 드로잉으로 담는다. 그리고 자신의 여정과 감정들을 간단하게 기록한다. 특히, 가로 3m 이상의파노라마 형식으로 선보이는 이태원의 야경은 이번 라운지 프로젝트를 위해 제작된 작가의 새로운 작업이다.

Pencil Drawing

본래 작가는 엷은 먹으로 얇게 선으로 집들의모습을 그려왔다. 작가가 드로잉 작업을 위해 선택한 연필은 밝음부터 어두움을 확연하게 드러내주는 도구이며, 작가의 시선을 좁은 골목길의 집들에서 도시의 거리 또는 산으로 멀리 옮기게 한 움직임의 원동력이기도 하다. 또한 자신의 감정을 표현하는 친숙한 도구이다. 아트선재센터 라운지에서는 자신의 감성을 연필로 구현한 강성은의 드로잉 작품들을 자유롭게 감상할 수 있다.

미학의 부활과 개념주의(conceptualism) 의 지속성 사이에 현대미술에 관한 비평의 글들은 다시 한번 다각도의 미학적 차원에 초점을 맞추어 집중해 왔다. 1960년대부터 미술 관행의 변화, 기관, 정치적인 맥락들, 이론적 패러다임들의 변화, 그리고 그 논의 가운데의 맥락과 특징은 특히 1989년부터 이어진 서구 미술 세계의 글로벌 확장과 함께 현저하게 움직여왔다. 이 책은 철학자, 예술가, 비평가와 미술 역사가들이 썼던 초학문적인 글들을 모아 네 가지 주요 주제들: “감각적 사고”, 예술적인 제약의 소멸, 포스트 자율주의적인 관행과 글로벌 미술세계의 전시적 가치를 언급하면서 현대예술의 미학의 장소를 재고한다.

Torn between a revival of aesthetics and the persistence of conceptualism, critical writing about contemporary art has once again come to focus on differing views of its aesthetic dimension. The context and character of these debates has, however, shifted markedly since the 1960s, with changes in art practices, institutions, political contexts, and theoretical paradigms—and in particular, with the global extension of the Western art world since 1989. This inter- and transdisciplinary collection of essays by philosophers, artists, critics, and art historians, reconsiders the place of the aesthetic in contemporary art, with reference to four main themes: aesthetics as “sensate thinking”; the dissolution of artistic limits; post-autonomous practices; and exhibition-values in a global artworld.

The essays originate in talks given on the occasion of an international conference on “Aesthetics and Contemporary Art” (2008), organized by the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP), Middlesex University, London, in cooperation with the Collaborative Research Centre “Aesthetic Experience and the Dissolution of Artistic Limits” (SfB 626), Free University Berlin.

On three occasions, between the fall of 2008 and the spring of 2009, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art organized three symposia under the title Rotterdam Dialogues: The Critics, The Curators, The Artists. Each three-day event focused on one agent in the art world, looking at their expectations, positions and the contexts in which they operate.

If a book cannot capture the atmosphere of lively excitement of 35 international critics, 48 curators and 57 artists, not to mention the 500+ visitors who attended each symposium, it can highlight the individual tone and spirit of many discussions that remain, by necessity, unfinished. This book follows a chronological structure, containing selected transcriptions from each symposium and the outcomes of the associated workshops. After this comes a free-wheeling section titled 'What are you talking about now?', a question sent to all the guests in the months that followed the symposia.

Their diverse reactions give a sense of the range of characters, ideas and practices that the symposia brought together.

김성환 작가의 아티스트 북 "기-다 릴께 Ki-Da Rilke"는 2011년 4월 17일 - 5월 29일, 바젤미술관에서 열린 작가의 전시 "Line Wall"과 함께 발간되었다. 작가는 이 책에서 프라하 태생의 시인 라이너 마리아 릴케 (1875-1926)의 작품을 다루고 있다. "Ki-Da Rilke"의 첫 부분은 릴케의 저작 'New Poems'(1907)에 대한 트랜스크립션과 드로잉이다. 두번째 부분은 릴케의 'Sonnets to Orpheus'(1923)에서 영감을 받은 김성환 작가의 드로잉들로 이것은 세번째 파트에서 다시 재구성된다.

The artist’s book Ki-da Rilke evolved in relation to the exhibition “Line Wall” by Sung Hwan Kim. In the book, Kim engages with the work of the Prague born poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926). The first part of Ki-da Rilke features a transcription and drawings of Rilke’s collection “New Poems” (1907) in the German original and on thin sheets of paper and notepads. The second part features Kim’s drawings inspired by Rilke’s “Sonnets to Orpheus” (1923), which are then further developed in the book’s third part, which comprises an independent picture story featuring recurring characters. These figures are named in an index on loose sheets of paper.
